A couple of nights ago WFMT re-broadcast a concert I had attended some weeks earlier. It was the Emerson SQ performing in the lovely Martin Theater at Ravinia. On the program were the last quartets by Haydn, Bartok and Schubert. I sat about 20 row...

The Brahms is indeed a lovely 24/88 remaster. I also ordered and received the Wand Bruckner 1-9 box from the new Sony series, and there is no mastering information on the package as far as I can tell. Does anyone know if these are remastered or...

Interesting, mats. The unit is not “complex device with many settings”. All those settings have own meaning and if you know how a tuner works then there is absolutely nothing menacing in those adjustments. You went for R...
Why the RBRx1 vs Rx1 for home use? What are your complaints about the RBRx1 (e.g. what would you change)?
Scooter, I have never heard the RX1. For my purposes it would likely have been perfect. So, aside from some poorl...

Inspired in part by Romy's results and excitement with FM, I wanted to try.
Restricted by apartment living, I had difficulties achieving a quiet stereo signal.
I was also concerned about the a/d conversion for d...

Thanks for sharing these images Serge.I would like to learn more about the Audiotekne bass solution. What size driver is that, is it a sealed cabinet, what is the baffle, and what frequency range is demanded from this box?Ho...

Too late now for points, but just the other day I tried to imagine your plan. and I was pretty close.Actually, it is a bit like what I have going now; 15" Eminence bass guitarr woofers in a sealed 3 cu ft cabinet,Oris 150 with 8" B&C midrange dr...

Good for you Romy. That looks just fantastic.Wonder if the long view into the forest will effect your depth of soundstage. Our friend Kurt had a huge basement with some towers set up in the middle. It could feel like a string quartet was somewhere 20 fe...

Quite a lot of this piano is in the left speaker. It reaches to the middle of the stage. It seems to me quite disconnected from the rest of the orchestra.Mats...

So I wrote one of the big DJ/producer guys at WFMT, complaining about the horrible sound last night. He wrote right back saying I was absolutely right, the Phil broadcast had sounded awful.Turns out FMT had made a last minute decision to take the PBS ...

I am curious how the Lindberg piece came across WGBH last night. Here in Chicago WFMT had the live feed. The results in my home were poor at best. It seemed my system was completely overwhelmed by what Magnus the Great offered. I just don't know wher...

Hi Scooter,
First of all, thank you for the Mac check list. Very helpful!About this Mac>More info>USB Device Tree: I appear to be able to select a dedicated port.My Revox B-260 S tuner seems immune to the Lavry at this point. I have a ferri...

Bracket these comments with my general thrill over finally being able to play music from my computer.(I did sell a pretty mint Evo VIII in part to get into this world.)At first the Lavry DA-11 sounded a little "Pro", electronic, mechanical to my ears...

At least here in Chicago the sound is really good too.I thought it started last week, and today we have a rich, spacious stage, growling bass, haunting horns and strings, and sometimes the singers hit a zone

Jessie, you are definitely the Man building such an amazing horn!Sorry to hear about your back, take your time getting well!FWIW, I cannot see a man able to realize such dreams being forced to do anything, well, except possibly by Kali avec cigarette...

AIFF to Mac pro, made a 16/44 disc, and wow, even in this format it is very enjoyable, and shockingly dynamic! (I guess it is time to call Lavry.)This is such a moving piece, and to think how much more music can become available, a new era seems to b...

WFMT simulcast LSO's Chicago performance.

An all-Serge Prokofiev program: Classical Symphony,
Piano Concerto #2, Symphony #5 in B-Flat Major.
Good sound, great playing all around, Feltsman ...

Heard this recording, by Valery Kuleshov on the Van Cliburn Competition 1993 disc, played on WFMT yesterday. A mezmerizing performance, fantastic arrangement, and superb sound. An Amazon reviewer writes:
"Though Horowitz wrote these variations a...

If you missed the webcast of the opening night of Tristan on WFMT, perhaps you can catch it on your local station sometime in the future. Fortune smiled and blessed me with two 7th row seats. I leave the commentary to John von Rhein:

I have found the T90A to be reasonably in-offensive with JBL 2435 Neo/Be compression drivers.
I use them with relatively small caps, currently 0,3uF.
The effect is a welcoming of a higher frequency palette that to my ears does
not seem incongruous...

Your experiments bring to mind the excellent results Jeffrey had with his half horns:http://www.goodsoundclub.com/GetPost.aspx?PostID=7467&Phrase=VSACIt is also good to hear that you have an "assistant" Jessie.Very good indeed....

Stumbled across this at Borders yesterday. Wow! What a beautiful set. Incredible solo playing by Cortot, and lots of Casals and Thibaud collaborations. Mostly from the 20 's and 30's, but also Chopin Preludes Op.28 from 1949. ...

Archetypal psychologist James Hillman visits with Ares and Aphrodite in his book "A Terrible Love of War" from 2004.The Greek understanding might well qualify when Romy calls for "a very firm and very talentedly developed super idea".Not music of cou...

Very interesting about the lateral vs. vertical resolution. According to "Raptor Force", a 2007 Nature documentary, the owl can locate a vole under the snow based on its offset ear geometry. "Like us, the owl can find the left-right position of a no...

Ophelie Gaillard has recorded a very good Bach set, and her Britten recordings are also quite excellent.WRT to her Bach, I find it somehow related to the second Maisky in heartfulness and spirit.Mats...

Another noteworthy effort might be the battery operated, solid state amplifiers with input and output transformers from Serge at www.audio-consulting.ch , available with copper windings. I keep thinking this might be good for Paul in his ...
